How to speak up when everyone in the room already agrees

The situation

Eleven people are nodding at a decision you think is wrong. The window to say so is closing in the next three seconds. Speaking up alone is the rep most people never take. What do you say?

They open with: “Great, so we're all agreed then — we go with option B. Any objections? …No? Perfect.

Why it's hard: It isn't the argument that stops you, it's not wanting to be the one who makes the meeting run long — so you tell yourself you'll raise it afterwards, and afterwards never comes.

Two things you could say

  • Before we lock it in — what's our answer if the supplier slips? I'm not trying to reopen the whole thing, I'd just rather we'd asked now than in March.

A question costs far less socially than an objection and does the same work, because it puts the risk in the room without asking anyone to admit they were wrong.

  • I might be the only one in the room on this, and tell me what I'm missing — but I don't think we've costed what happens if it slips, and I'd rather say that now than nod and worry about it all week.

Flagging that you may be alone gives you permission to speak and the room permission to reconsider, and an offer to be corrected is much harder to resent than a flat disagreement.

What to avoid

"No, no, I'm happy — let's go with B." — the nod you don't mean spends the only three seconds in which the room could still act, and the objection you save for the corridor afterwards changes nothing except how you're seen.

The principle

Ask the question the room is avoiding, as a question: "Before we lock it — what happens to B if the supplier slips?" A question is easier to voice than an objection, and it does the same job.
