How to answer "you say you love animals but you eat them"
The situation
Someone has caught the contradiction and put it to you directly. You do eat meat. You don't want to pretend the point doesn't land, and you don't want to be bullied into a position. What do you say?
They open with: “You say you care about animals and then you eat them. Explain that to me.”
Why it's hard: The contradiction is real and you know it, so you're tempted to either pretend it doesn't land or get bullied into a position you don't hold.
Two things you could say
“You're right — there's a tension there, and I'm not going to pretend there isn't. The question I'd actually argue is whether an imperfect position is worthless, because I don't think it is.”
Conceding the contradiction openly is far stronger than defending it, because it removes their weapon and moves the argument to the real question of whether inconsistency invalidates a view.
“What would you accept as progress — less meat, better welfare, no factory farming? Because if only zero counts, we're not really talking about animals, we're talking about purity.”
Asking what would count as progress separates a genuine ethical argument from a gotcha, and exposes whether they want an outcome for animals or just a win over you.
What to avoid
"Well, lions eat meat, it's natural." — the appeal to nature is a classic fallacy (plenty of natural things are horrific), it dodges the actual charge of hypocrisy, and a sharp opponent takes it apart in one sentence.
The principle
Concede what's true — the contradiction is real — before you defend anything. Then argue the actual question: whether an imperfect position is worthless. Owning the gap is far stronger than pretending it isn't there.
